Mason Jar Peppermint Cocoa

A product of Pinterest obsession

Ever been to Pinterest? WARNING: If you haven’t been, you better get all your work done before you check it out. It’s so addicting, you’ll never escape!

Pinterest lights a major creative spark in my brain. I’ve always been kinda crafty and I like doing artsy fartsy stuff, but was never really that good at it. I actually made most of my Christmas presents this year from Pinterest inspiration, and they turned out cute! I’ll add more later. I don’t want to spoil the surprise for everything.

One of the popular things right now are Mason jars, which you learn within 3 minutes of being on the website that they can be used for about a bajillion different things. And they’re adorable.

Christmas gifts using mason jars. Cheap, easy, cute, unique. Perfect idea!
And, who doesn’t love peppermint flavored anything at this time of the year? I saw this recipe and knew it was a winner.

1/2 cup powdered milk
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 cup white sugar
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup mini semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup crushed peppermint candies

Layer ingredients, in the order as listed above, in a 16 oz mason jar. Go ahead and shake it between layers so it’s nice and even. Be prepared to make a mess.

Attach tag with instructions:
Mix contents in a large bowl. For each serving, place 1/3 cup mix in a mug and stir in 1 cup boiling water or milk.

Pat and I tried it last night. I was crossing my fingers it was drinkable… because I had already made 11 jars of them. It was. Phew! We made it with milk and it was pretty rich, so I think water would be fine too.

I think these mason jar mugs are really cute and of course appropriate for cocoa, but you can definitely use regular 16 oz Ball or Libbey jars, found at any Target/Walmart/grocery store.

I felt a little bad taking the ingredients out of the mason jar because it was so pretty and festive, but my chocolate craving just won out. The peppermint cocoa was so delicious! This recipe is a keeper!!
